Merlin is one of the first named varieties. Grown by James Allen in the 1880s from seed, it features a beautiful inner mark. Few other snowdrops from this galanthophile survive, other ones being ‘Magnet’ and ‘Galatea’.
James Allen believed it to be a cross between a G. elwesii and a G. plicatus. The plant is known for being the first with completely green inner marks. Many galantophiles consider there to be contemporary snowdrop varieties with the same feature that sport more beautiful flowers.
