Galanthus koenenianus

Galanthus koenenianus is a small species from northeast Turkey, only occuring on few sites (1). It is named after the introducer of the species, German botanist Manfred Koenen. The species is found at about 1500m in the wild in areas with heavy rain- and snowfall. The plants flower between February and March, growing scapes from 5-14cm in length. In general, it’s a small plant (2). The leaves have supervolute verniation, and, when developed, have a particularly distinctive ribbed appearance of the underside (1). They reach up to 12-23 x 0,5-1,2cm in size.

It is not often found in cultivation and is considered difficult to maintain. The plant should be hardy in western Europe.
